U5 (2022) Learn to Skate & Introduction to Ice Hockey

A true first step for new skaters and first-time hockey families in Hamilton, Ontario. This U5 (2022) program introduces skating and beginner hockey fundamentals with mini-games built into the season.

Weekend mornings (Saturday or Sunday) • 18 weeks (Oct 2026–Mar 2027)

Built for New Skaters

This program is designed for families new to hockey and for children learning to skate. No prior experience is necessary—basic hockey skills are covered throughout the season, including mini-games. 

What your player learns

  • Skating confidence: balance, stride, stopping, and turning
  • Beginner hockey basics: puck touches, simple drills, and game awareness
  • Mini-games built into the season to keep learning fun and active

Professional Development Staff

The Hamilton Steel Development Team instructs all 18 weeks of the program, including professional power skating instructors and Hockey Canada skills coaches. 

Extra program features

  • New Coaches Mentor Program working alongside the Steel Development Team
  • Steel jerseys/socks pickup day in mid-September 2026 
  • Team pictures + year-end custom Steel medals

Planned breaks

  • No hockey on Thanksgiving weekend
  • Two-week Christmas holiday

Year-end: custom Steel medals + Super Sat celebration (March 2027).

Equipment Requirements

Full ice hockey equipment is required for the program, including a stick.

Is this program only for kids who can already skate?

No. This program is designed for those learning to skate and families new to hockey. No prior experience is necessary.

When does the U5 season run?

18 weeks from October 2026 to March 2027 with weekend morning options (Saturday or Sunday). The program finishes before March Break. 

Where are sessions held?

At Chedoke Arena (West Mountain) and LIUNA 4 Ice Centre (East Mountain), both in Hamilton, Ontario.

What equipment do we need?

Full ice hockey equipment is required, including a stick.
