If you’re a new hockey family, you’re in the right place. This is a simple step-by-step guide for parents registering a child who has never played minor hockey in Canada. First you’ll get your child set up with Hockey Canada — then you can register for Hamilton Steel U5–U7.

New Player Registration Steps (U5–U7)

If your child has never played minor hockey in Canada, you must complete Step 1 first to obtain an HCR number.

  1. Step 1 — Request an HCR Number (Email the Registrar)

    Email the information below to apply for your child’s Hockey Canada Registration (HCR) number. You’ll receive your child’s new HCR number by email within 2 days.

    Email to:

    Include the following:

    • Parent’s First & Last Name
    • Email Address
    • Parent Cell Number
    • Child’s First & Last Name (Legal Name Only)
    • Date of Birth (Month-Day-Year)
    • Gender
    • Primary Language (English or French)
    • Home Mailing Address (with Postal Code)
    • Player’s Citizenship (e.g., Canadian)
    • Identify as Indigenous (Yes or No)
    • Move-in Year to Current Address
    • Race & Ethnicity or “Prefer Not to Say”
    • Attach scanned copy: Current Driver’s License
    • Attach scanned copy: Player’s Birth Certificate

    Important: Hockey Canada requires you to upload your child’s birth certificate and your current Driver’s License to complete the registration. NO EXCEPTIONS. Your registration cannot be processed without these documents.

  2. Step 2 — Add Your Child to Your Hockey Canada (HCR) Account

    Once you receive your child’s HCR number, log in (or create) your Hockey Canada Registration account and add your child as a member.

    Go to:

    • Click LOGIN (top right). If you’ve never registered a child before, create a new account.
    • Once logged in, go to My Account (circle/person icon at top right).
    • On the left-hand menu, select Members.
    • Click the “Add a member” icon (person with a plus sign).
    • Enter your child’s info (name + birth date) or use the HCR number provided.
  3. Step 3 — Find Hamilton Steel and Complete Registration

    After your child appears in your Members list, search for HAMILTON STEEL in the HCR portal to complete registration.

    Payment: Full payment must be made by e-transfer at the time of registration. Credit cards and cheques will not be accepted.

FAQ for First-Time Hockey Families (U5–U7)

My child has never played hockey. Is U5–U7 okay for beginners?

Yes. These programs are designed for young players and new families — you just need to complete the Hockey Canada setup (HCR number) first.

Do we need an HCR number before registering?

If your child has never played minor hockey in Canada, yes — you must request and receive an HCR number before you can complete registration.

What documents do we need?

A scanned copy of your current Driver’s License and your child’s Birth Certificate are required by Hockey Canada. Registration cannot be processed without them.

Where do we register after we receive the HCR number?

Log in at register.hockeycanada.ca, add your child under Members, then search for HAMILTON STEEL to complete registration.

What payment types are accepted?

Payment must be made by e-transfer at the time of registration. Credit cards and cheques are not accepted.
